Sarah Kwan - Chinese Art and Culture in Scotland

Sarah Kwan is a highly acclaimed freelance artist and illustrator residing in Edinburgh. Her expertise lies in various artistic domains including illustration, design, commissioned fine art, and mural creation. Kwan received a BA in Fine Art Drawing & Painting from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design in 2008. Her artworks have been showcased in renowned galleries such as the Royal Scottish Academy and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.

In June 2020, Kwan co-founded the East and Southeast Asia Scotland (ESA Scotland). During the period of COVID-19 pandemic, she hosted a number of online workshops, guiding local and overseas participants to explore Asian art styles and stories. In recognition of her talent and skills, Kwan was honoured with the Independent Award Category of the Creative Edinburgh Awards in 2021.

Subject matter and style

Sarah Kwan’s captivating and vibrant artwork, known as the ‘East Meets West Series’, delves into the delightful connections between Scottish/Western and Chinese cultures. With a playful and fun approach, she skillfully incorporates decorative patterns and pops of bright colours, resulting in visually stunning pieces. Recently, Sarah has the honour of being featured in the LOOP series by BBC Scotland, where her artwork and unique Scottish-Chinese background were beautifully showcased, providing viewers with a fascinating insight into her artistic journey and cultural influences.
