The Burrell Collection in Glasgow displays Chinese objects in each of its galleries, donated by Sir William and Lady Burrell to the city of Glasgow in 1944. Though Burrell was more famously known as a collector of  of European art, there is no shortage of Chinese objects in his collection, some dating from the prehistoric period of the Yang Shao period (3000-2000 BCE), with other artworks only dating from the 20th century. Most of these objects are porcelain pieces: the South East Gallery possesses many dishes and plates from the Qing dynasty, Kangxi period (1662-1722). These all portray various scenes from the Chinese play ‘The Romance of the Western Chamber’ by Wang Shifu 王實甫 (1250-c.1337).

The Makers Galleries boasts the rather striking Jade Dragon, carved from Jade in the 20th century, whilst the North Gallery displays the impressive stone statue of Buddha from the Ming Dynasty as well as the goddess Guanyin captured in wood from the Song dynasty (12th century). The collection’s other galleries equally have much to offer to the world of Chinese art.
