Hock on the exhibition, Reid Gallery

Born to Chinese parents in Taiping, Malaysia, Hock Aun Teh (b. 1950) was the first Asian student to graduate from Glasgow School of Art’s drawing and painting department in 1974. In Expanding Traditions, the artist returns to his alma mater to display work ranging from early academic sketches and experiments to large-scale acrylic works completed in his Glasgow and Taiping studios. Hock attributes the striking, expressive quality of his paintings to his tropical kampung childhood, early training in Chinese painting, and experience living in Scotland over the last 45 years, expressed via his physical and emotional reactions.

I would like to dedicate this exhibition to my former school, which nurtured me as a student, as I wish my work to be a new inspiration to all students.”
