The Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum has a small but notable collection of Chinese objects. In 1907, two embroidered textiles were presented to the Scottish-American industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919) by the prominent Chinese political thinker and reformer Kang Youwei 康有為 (1858-1927) and his daughter, Kang Tongbi 康同璧 (1887-1969). The collection also includes a hand-painted silk textile from the International Institute of China as a gift to Carnegie. A photograph album compiled by Carnegie contains 87 albumen prints, mainly views of Shanghai, Hong Kong, Macao and Canton (Guangzhou). The collection demonstrates Carnegie’s significant international status, which helped to facilitate cultural exchange between China and Scotland.
